Your customers adapt too — often before you notice. Their behavior is market intelligence you can gather without a research budget.

Customer adaptation shows up in how they buy, not in surveys about technology. They arrive with comparison spreadsheets they didn't build by hand. They request deliverables in formats that match what other vendors produced with AI assistance. They negotiate using market data pulled faster than your team can replicate.

Gather intelligence through existing channels. Sales calls: ask what efficiency improvements they're prioritizing this year — listen for AI subtext in speed and customization demands. Support tickets: note requests that imply automated expectations ('Can you send this by end of day in the format attached?'). Lost deals: ask directly what the winner did differently; buyers often mention responsiveness.

Segment customers into three groups: AI-forward (actively pushing vendors to automate), AI-aware (using tools internally, expecting you to keep pace), and AI-indifferent (still valuing relationship over speed). Your adaptation mix differs by segment — don't over-automate relationships that monetize trust and presence.

Run a monthly 'customer signal review' with sales and account management. Three questions: What are they doing faster? What are they asking us to match? Where did we surprise them positively with human service? Adaptation strategy should reinforce positives, not only close gaps.

This diagnostic prevents building for an imaginary market. Many META B2B relationships still reward reliability and local expertise over flash. Let customer behavior — not Twitter discourse — set your pace. Adapt where they're pulling; differentiate where they still value your judgment.
