Pricing in an AI-compressed market
AI compresses delivery costs unevenly across competitors. Some reinvest savings into lower prices; others into faster turnaround; others into margin. If you price as if nothing changed, you either lose deals to cheaper/fast competitors or leave margin on the table when you're still fully manual.
Start with value mapping, not cost-plus. What outcomes do clients pay for — certainty, speed, expertise, compliance, status? Which of those are enhanced or commoditized by AI in your category? Price the differentiated outcomes; don't defend line items customers no longer value.
Segment offers. A 'rapid' tier with AI-assisted delivery at competitive price points; a 'strategic' tier with deeper human involvement at premium. Transparency builds trust — explain what differs, not just what costs more.
Monitor competitor pricing signals quarterly — public rate cards, RFP patterns, win/loss interviews. AI makes market intelligence easier to gather; use it on economics, not only on lead gen.
Internal discipline: know your unit economics per tier after adaptation. Some founders cut prices while AI savings haven't materialized — a dangerous squeeze. Adapt operations first, then price with confidence.
