New roles emerging in adapted businesses
Full-time AI leadership may be premature; hybrid roles aren't. Adapted businesses distribute ownership: workflow owners maintain playbooks and KPIs; tool coordinators manage approved stack and training; quality reviewers audit high-tier outputs; data stewards maintain classification and vendor registers.
These roles often start as 20% allocations for existing high performers rather than new headcount. Title them clearly internally — ambiguity breeds resentment when workload grows invisibly.
Hiring externally makes sense when adaptation portfolio spans multiple departments, compliance requirements intensify, or integration work exceeds fractional capacity. Until then, distributed roles keep knowledge close to operations.
Write simple role charters: responsibilities, time expectation, decision rights, success metrics. Charters prevent 'everyone's job' from becoming 'nobody's job.'
Review role evolution semi-annually. Yesterday's coordinator may become tomorrow's operations lead; charters should update as maturity grows. Adaptation org design is iterative, not a one-shot reorg memo.
