Operational data accumulated ethically becomes harder for competitors to copy than any subscription.

Data asset thinking isn't 'sell customer data.' It's recognizing that lawful operational data — win/loss patterns, service timelines, quality defects, seasonal demand, pricing sensitivity — improves decisions when structured and reused.

Inventory what you collect today: CRM, support, finance, operations, marketing. Identify gaps blocking adaptation — missing churn reasons, inconsistent tagging, siloed spreadsheets.

Improve capture in workflows people already use; don't add parallel logging they'll ignore. AI-assisted tagging and summarization can structure inputs if humans verify.

Use data assets internally first: better qualification scores, smarter inventory alerts, pricing tier recommendations, proactive retention outreach. External data products are rarely step one for SMBs.

Protect assets with sovereignty and access discipline from phase four. Data advantage evaporates if leaked or locked in vendor formats you can't export.
